Why Don’t Diets Work?

Most people who are overweight or obese will be able to relate to the following scenario:

You get motivated for your New Year’s resolution or because summer is coming, and you decide to go on a diet. You surf the web and find the “latest and greatest” diet fad–Atkins, South Beach, Caveman, Weight Watchers…the list is endless, but one is usually popular with Oprah and Dr. Oz each year. You lose a few or even several pounds on your new diet over the next few weeks. But as time passes, life and your old habits catch up and you start cheating on your diet. Just a little bit at first, then more and more often. The pounds come roaring back, and you end up back at your old weight, or even heavier than before. Sound familiar? If so, you’ve been the victim of a “yo-yo” diet. Your weight drops, then snaps back up like a yo-yo. These diets are not just ineffective and frustrating; medical research shows that they are actually harmful to your long-term health.

So why don’t diets work? Most diets intended for weight loss are designed to suddenly and drastically deprive your body of some type of food or nutrient–be it calories, carbs, fat, meat, sugar, etc. What happens when you deprive your body of something suddenly? It goes into starvation mode. The human body has evolved over millions of years to keep us alive during times of starvation, and it becomes hyperefficient at using any type of food you consume. If the body can learn to get by on less, what will happen when you give it more (ie, when you start cheating on your diet)? It will simply store those extra calories as a way to protect itself from the next round of starvation…your next diet. Where does it store those extra calories? In fat cells. Not evil, just evolution.

Medical Weight Loss Programs

If you’ve tried dieting over and over and are still overweight or obese, it may be time to try a medical weight loss program, preferably one that uses a combination of different approaches. At Access Now Urgent Care, we offer Weight Loss Now, a proven medical weight loss program that is customized to meet each patient’s needs for reaching a healthy weight. Designed by our medical director, Dr. Shobhit Arora, the program offers simple, effective tools that will help you lose weight in a healthy and sustainable manner. The focus is on gradually shedding pounds and changing eating and exercise habits.

How is Weight Loss Now different from other programs?

Unlike many programs, Weight Loss Now is not a one-size-fits-all product that focuses on only one aspect of weight loss. It is not a diet, an exercise plan, or a medication, but some combination of all three that is designed based on your medical history and individual needs.

The program starts with a comprehensive medical evaluation designed to identify any medical reasons you may have for being overweight or obese. After the consultation, Dr. Arora will design a customized program that targets:

Suppressing your appetite with a combination of dietary changes and prescription medication.
Increasing your metabolism and energy expenditure using a combination of exercise, natural energy boosters, and lipotropic (fat-burning) B12 injections.
Behavior modification and lifestyle changes to help you maintain your weight loss long-term.
